Exclusive-Microsoft retreats in China, but AI boom helps it keep a window open

Microsoft once regarded the idea of quitting China as unthinkable. In the past five years, however, at least 15 Microsoft branch offices and joint ventures in China have been shut, corporate filings show, and Microsoft is pursuing what five company sources described as ‌a strategy of retreat. The Leadership Lesson Xero’s CEO Learned From a Tennis Legend

When I spoke to Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, CEO of Xero, in early June, she said she didn’t want to talk too much about the company’s share price. Its share price was down more than 50% from one year prior even though the company beat revenue estimates for its fiscal 2026, which ended March 31. The drop was partly attributed to the “SaaS Apocalypse,” but also to investor concerns about the impact of a 2025 acquisition, a move the company made to expand the business in the U.S.

Alphabet (NasdaqGS:GOOGL) faces more than 3,000 youth addiction lawsuits in US federal court after a key ruling denied dismissal efforts by major social media companies. The court decision leaves Google and peers exposed to potential legal findings on platform design and user harm, with possible knock-on effects for future regulation. Earnings Are Beating Wall Street’s Boldest Expectations. What Comes Next.

There’s an elegant simplicity to one of the central tenets in gauging the health of the stock market and the companies that comprise its benchmark indexes: figuring out what’s in the till at the end of the day. Profit remains the most important measure of stock market health—and Corporate America is raking it in. “The greatest force behind stock markets right now is earnings, which is helping to overshadow concerns about Iran, inflation and AI [capital expenditure] spending viability,” said Dennis Follmer, chief investment officer, at Montis Financial in Waltham, Mass., to Barron’s. “Earnings have been an absolute freight train driving this market higher.”
