Tension between Silicon Valley’s astronomical AI spending and Wall Street fears that it won’t pay off had been sending markets on a wild ride. The company’s stock surged 16% after its earnings quelled concerns that investments on data centers, chips and more would outpace the company’s ability to generate cash. Microsoft’s $450 billion one-day gain in market capitalization was the largest by any U.S. business, ever.
Amazon stock jumped after the e-commerce and cloud-computing giant reported second-quarter results. The closely-watched Amazon Web Services business grew 37% to $42.4 billion. Analysts were forecasting 31.3% growth for AWS prior to the report.
Amazon.com topped market expectations for quarterly cloud revenue growth on Thursday on the back of surging enterprise AI spending, signaling the company's hefty investments were bearing fruit. Revenue at its cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services, jumped 37% to $42.2 billion in the second quarter ended June 30, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of a 31.21% increase, according to data compiled by LSEG. Amazon said it burned $7.6 billion of cash on a trailing twelve months basis in the second quarter, compared to $18.2 billion in free cash flow a year earlier.
Microsoft and Meta maintained substantial infrastructure programs, supporting expectations for continuing demand for NVIDIA processors.
Amazon's forthcoming results will test whether accelerating AWS demand can justify its enormous artificial-intelligence infrastructure budget.
In midday trading on Thursday, Microsoft stock had surged 17% while Meta Platforms shares had sunk 9%. On that front, Microsoft and Meta had very different things to say. In the latest quarter, Meta’s cash flow was near zero after capex, while Microsoft had just shy of $20 billion, still enough to buy back some shares.
Beaten-down Oracle stock got a big lift Thursday following news that it will expand a partnership with Google parent Alphabet. Strong results from enterprise tech rival Microsoft are also likely providing a boost. An expanded partnership will bring Google's Gemini models to Oracle's portfolio of enterprise applications, the companies announced in a joint press release.
Microsoft’s surge sparked a sharp rebound, but weakening technical patterns across the QQQ, S&P 500, and Dow suggest the rally may prove short-lived.
