Meta Platforms plans to start manufacturing an artificial intelligence chip from September as part of its plan to boost overall ‌computing power to 14 gigawatts next year, showed an internal memo reviewed by Reuters. The tech firm's data center ‌chip, code-named "Iris", is part of a four-generation project for Meta Training and Inference Accelerators (MTIA) that it will design in-house. Meta tailored the chip for its own needs and is working with Broadcom ‌to help design it and Taiwan Semiconductor ⁠Manufacturing Co to manufacture it.

Facebook and Instagram parent Meta said Wednesday it will invest more than US$9.1 billion to build its first artificial intelligence data center in Canada and its largest outside the United States. The facility will be built in Sturgeon County, Alberta, and powered by a natural gas-fired plant being developed by a consortium that includes Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline Ltd. Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish called the project “a big deal for Alberta,” saying the province had created a regulatory framework to attract data center investment.

The flood of new bonds to fund the artificial-intelligence build-out seems to finally be getting a little bit much for investors. The extra yield, or spread, investors demand to hold bonds backed by AI hyperscalers moved broadly higher on Tuesday as Amazon issued $25 billion of bonds, returning to the U.S. debt market just four months after it completed a $37 billion bond sale. The spread on Amazon’s 5.8% notes due in 2036 jumped to 0.7 percentage point from 0.63 percentage point on Monday, according to MarketAxess.
