Some 89,000 unionised Samsung Electronics' workers in South Korea will begin voting on Friday on a pay deal that has been hailed as a win for the company as well as its memory chip workers. The vote is due to run until 10:00 a.m. on May 27. The 11th-hour government-mediated deal reached on Wednesday averted a threatened 18-day strike that risked inflicting significant pain on South Korea's economy and denting global chip supply.
For all the hype over those two IPOs, South Korea’s SK Hynix could be the hottest new AI story for American investors in the coming weeks. The memory-chip maker has already filed an application to list American depositary receipts with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The size and pricing of the listing haven’t been decided, but SK Hynix could raise up to $10 billion according to local Korean media reports.
The pay deal reached between Samsung Electronics and its union is being hailed as a win for the company which gained key concessions and averted a massive strike, as well as for its memory chip workers - some of whom will receive $416,000 bonuses. Samsung's shares surged 8.5% to a record high on Thursday after the planned 18-day strike by some 48,000 domestic workers was suspended. Samsung workers had been furious about the large gap in bonuses with their peers at smaller rival SK Hynix which had beaten Samsung to the punch in delivering advanced AI chip units to Nvidia, bolstering its fortunes.
Around Samsung Electronics' sprawling chip complex southwest of Seoul, workers and residents have met news of a last-gasp pay agreement to prevent a strike with both relief and concern. The tentative pay deal has sparked relief in South Korea, given Samsung's importance to the economy, while raising hopes among businesses in the neighbourhood around the complex. "If employees receive performance bonuses as a result of this general strike, I think restaurants near Samsung will benefit greatly, including through company dinners and group meals,” said Lee Se-hee, who owns a fine dining restaurant in Pyeongtaek, a city of around 650,000 people.

Wednesday brought a bevy of tech news, from the posting of SpaceX's IPO filing to updates on Nvidia, Anthropic and OpenAI. For the rest of the week, focus turns to the American consumer with Walmart earnings and Friday's swearing in of Kevin Warsh as the new Federal Reserve chair.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Gregor Stuart Hunter The fight over pay is not done at Samsung Electronics.
Samsung Electronics' shares surged on Thursday after it clinched an 11th-hour deal with its South Korean union to avert a strike, although the terms which included bonuses of around $416,000 for some workers gave rise to some concern. A planned 18-day strike by some 48,000 union members has now been suspended, while the agreement, which was mediated by the government, is put to a vote between May 22 and May 27. The deal sparked relief across South Korea.
South Korean stocks rallied after Samsung Electronics Co. reached a tentative deal with its labor union, defusing the threat of an imminent strike at the world's largest memory chipmaker.
Shares rallied Thursday across Asia, tracking gains on Wall Street after pressure from the bond market eased and oil prices fell back. The advance was also powered by a stronger-than-expected quarterly report from chipmaker Nvidia, whose profit rocketed more than 200% higher in the February-April quarter from a year earlier, while revenue jumped 85%. Nvidia has been one of the biggest beneficiaries from the boom in artificial intelligence, thanks to powerful demand for its high-end AI chips.

Samsung Electronics' shares rose as much as 6.5% in morning trade on Thursday after the tech giant and its South Korean union reached a tentative pay deal, potentially averting a strike that had threatened to hit the economy and undermine global chip supply chains. The union said the planned 18-day strike by nearly 48,000 members would be suspended while the tentative 11th-hour deal is put to a vote between May 22 and 27. Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, said investors were relieved that uncertainty surrounding the prospect of a strike had eased.

The South Korean government has warned that it could invoke emergency powers to avert a strike by Samsung workers set to start tomorrow, noting the company's outsize importance for the economy. At the heart of the disagreement is a debate over how Samsung’s huge profits from the AI windfall should be shared. An 18-day strike could reduce Samsung’s operating profit by roughly 5% this year, according to Morningstar analyst Jing Jie Yu.

Samsung Electronics' labour union plans to embark on a massive 18-day strike on Thursday after bonus payment talks with management collapsed and attention is now focused on whether the government will issue an emergency arbitration order. Some 48,000 people plan to walk off the job with significant consequences for the South Korean economy and the supply of memory chips globally, and the government flagged at the weekend that such an order is possible. A South Korean government official said on Wednesday that talk of emergency arbitration is premature and that there was still time for dialogue.
