US energy storage additions hit a first-quarter record, report shows

U.S. energy storage developers installed 9.7 gigawatt-hours of new capacity in the first quarter of 2026, marking a record ‌high for the quarter, an industry report showed on Thursday. Energy storage ‌capacity grew 32% in the quarter from a year ago despite federal actions the industry says are slowing clean energy development, the report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence said. The SEIA said the demand is being driven by data centers, volatile electricity prices and disruptions to global gas and gas ‌turbine supplies.

The Real Winner of SpaceX’s IPO: Mark Zuckerberg

Wall Street has spent the last six months questioning Mark Zuckerberg’s aggressive AI capital spending, with Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) raising its 2026 capex guidance to $125 to $145 billion after a Q1 in which revenue grew 33% year over year. While everyone debates whether Meta is overspending, a quieter filing from SpaceX just laid out ... The Real Winner of SpaceX’s IPO: Mark Zuckerberg

SpaceX’s Expected Moonshot Valuation

SpaceX, which is expected to target a valuation of more than $1.5 trillion at IPO, has a financial picture that is notably worse than any other mega-cap U.S. company. Meta, valued in the same range SpaceX is targeting, had sales 11 times that last year and profits of $60 billion. SpaceX, if ultimately valued at $1.5 trillion, would be valued at 80 times sales.

Higher Prices Could Slow the AI Building Boom

AI’s big bucks go mostly toward computing gear like chips and servers in data centers. Should that trend persist, it could come to bite suppliers including chip giant Nvidia which reports quarterly results after the bell today. Nvidia can insulate itself from cost inflation by expanding offerings that don’t require as much in-demand memory, by passing on higher prices to customers and by inking longer-term deals with its own suppliers at lower prices.

SpaceX already defies the law of gravity. The rocket maker is looking to raise as much as $80 billion or more in its initial public offering, making it the biggest ever in terms of funds raised. If its market value at offering reaches $1.71 trillion, that would top the previous record for valuation of a newly public company, set in 2019 by the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known as Aramco.

Exclusive-Meta offers AI rival chatbots limited free WhatsApp access, sources say

Meta Platforms has offered to give rival AI chatbots including OpenAI free access to its social messaging service WhatsApp in Europe, but will start charging them ‌once they hit a limit, two people with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday. The details of ‌the offer, previously unreported, come as Mark Zuckerberg's tech and social media giant that also controls Facebook, looks to appease increasingly tough EU regulators that are tightening the screws on Big Tech. Meta submitted its proposal to EU antitrust regulators last week after the European Commission said it was considering an order requiring the firm to provide rivals access to WhatsApp until it wraps up an ongoing investigation into the case.

Saudi Arabia's Humain picks Goldman Sachs to advise on data centre financing, sources say

Saudi Arabia-backed artificial intelligence company Humain has picked Goldman Sachs to advise on a financing package to build data centres in the kingdom that ‌could be worth at least 20 billion riyals, two sources with knowledge of the matter ‌told Reuters, as the firm races to expand capacity amid a regional AI push. The move illustrates how Saudi Arabia, like Gulf neighbours Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, is accelerating its AI build-out to capitalise on surging global demand for computing power. The country is also banking on cheap energy to power data centres - a powerful lure for hyperscalers such as Google, Microsoft and Meta that are driving AI adoption.

YouTube, Snap settle school district's social media addiction claims

Alphabet's YouTube and Snap have reached settlements in the first case set for trial in litigation seeking to force ‌social media platforms to cover the costs school districts incur to combat a youth ‌mental health crisis they say the companies fueled. The settlements were detailed in court filings on Friday in federal court in Oakland, California, and resolve claims by a Kentucky school district that is still due to take Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms and TikTok to trial on June 15. Terms of the settlements with Breathitt County School District in rural Eastern Kentucky were not disclosed.
