Crypto firms prepare defenses as quantum threat to encryption draws nearer

The cryptocurrency industry is starting to prepare for the threat of quantum computing as recent advances fuel concerns that the technology could soon be able to crack the cryptography that protects transactions and digital wallets. Quantum computers can solve complex mathematical problems much faster than today's sophisticated computers, and could be used to unscramble conventional methods for encrypting digital ‌information. While the technology remains largely experimental, crypto industry concerns ‌have grown since March research from Alphabet's Google, one of several tech giants pioneering the technology, suggested quantum computers may be able to break that cryptography sooner than previously expected, according to executives and analysts.

Apple plans to spend more than $30 billion as part ‌of a chip-supply agreement reached earlier this ‌week with Broadcom that will also see the chipmaker expand a ​factory in Colorado, the companies said on Wednesday. Broadcom disclosed on Monday it had secured a long-term supply deal through 2031 with the iPhone maker. On Wednesday, Apple said ‌the deal will ⁠involve a radiofrequency chip called FBAR filters that will help Apple devices communicate wirelessly and ⁠which Apple has been working with Broadcom to develop since at least 2023.
