IBM buys HRL Laboratories in shift to two-track quantum computing strategy

IBM has agreed to buy HRL Laboratories, a private quantum computing research lab jointly owned by Boeing Co and General Motors, the ‌company said on Thursday, adding a second pillar to IBM's quantum computing efforts. IBM has been racing ‌against Alphabet's Google, Microsoft and others to create practical quantum machines that can crack problems that would take conventional computers thousands of years to solve. In May, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration said it would award $1 billion to IBM to set up a new company called Anderon in New Albany, New York, to serve as a chip factory for U.S. quantum computing firms.

EU hits Google with $1 billion fine over its Play app store and search

The European Union on Thursday hit Google with a fine of 890 million euros ($1 billion) after it said the technology behemoth broke digital antitrust regulations by setting up Google Play and its ubiquitous search engine to corral consumers towards its own services and apps to the detriment of competitors. It was the latest major crackdown on Big Tech by Brussels, which has led the world in reining in some of the world's largest companies from Silicon Valley to Beijing. Google had recently lost its appeal of a $4.5 billion antitrust fine imposed for throttling competition and reducing consumer choice through the dominance of its mobile Android operating system.

Pichai pushes back on claims Google is losing ground in AI race

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai used Wednesday's earnings call to mount a robust defence of Google's AI strategy, pushing back on concerns that the company has fallen behind rivals after ‌delaying a flagship model and ceding ground in AI coding. Investors have become increasingly uneasy over Google delaying the release of ‌Gemini 3.5 Pro, a model originally slated for June that was expected to bolster the company's standing in AI coding and autonomous "agent" tasks, two of the industry's most fiercely contested areas. The latest setback has fueled worries that Google was losing momentum just as OpenAI and Anthropic and a host of Chinese rivals have accelerated the pace of model releases.

S&P 500 Stock Rockets Late On Earnings As Google Boosts Capex

S&P 500 member United Rentals soared on stronger-than-forecast Q2 results after Wednesday's close as Google got a late-day haircut. AI data center construction has helped supercharge earnings for URI, which provides a one-stop shop for large construction projects. Google's plan to keep boosting capital spending suggests the demand environment for heavy machinery will keep shining, even as it may slow the pay-off for AI hyperscalers.
