In 2019, while researching a book on the U.S.-China competition, I visited Huawei’s sprawling new R&D campus in Dongguan, a city about an hour’s drive from the company’s Shenzhen headquarters. A Huawei executive explained the design to me with a straight face: “We’re doing well in Europe.” In a Wall Street Journal interview that November, founder Ren Zhengfei invited President Trump to come visit and brushed off U.S. sanctions with characteristic bravado.

Taiwan chip designer MediaTek said on Friday it supports both TSMC's and Intel's advanced packaging technologies, allowing customers to choose between the two approaches. CoWoS, or Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate, is TSMC's advanced packaging technology widely used for artificial intelligence chips, including those designed by Nvidia.
(Bloomberg) -- Nvidia Corp.’s Jensen Huang leads a parade of AI computing leaders in Taiwan for Asia’s biggest technology showcase, Computex. Over a jam-packed week, the hardware linchpins of the post-ChatGPT era will debate the most pressing issues facing their industry, from growing bottlenecks in the supply of essential components like memory chips to the rise of challengers to Nvidia at the apex of the semiconductor hierarchy. Most Read from BloombergSingapore Hands Byju's Founder His First E

A senior TSMC executive said on Thursday that surging electricity demands from AI are making energy efficiency rather than computing power the main constraint shaping future computer chip development. Kevin Zhang, Senior Vice President of Business Development, said customers across smartphones to AI data centres are increasingly prioritising performance gains that do not drive up power use, as operators contend with the cost and availability of electricity. The shift is part of a broader turning point for the semiconductor industry, where simply packing more transistors onto chips is no longer enough to sustain performance gains for energy-hungry AI workloads.
TAIPEI, May 27 (Reuters) - Nvidia's chief executive said on Wednesday the chip company plans to invest around $150 billion a year in Taiwan, terming it the "epicentre" of the AI revolution and predicting it will be the world's tech manufacturing hub for a long time. "Four years ago, five years ago, Nvidia was spending about 10, 15 billion dollars a year in Taiwan.
SK Hynix has become one of the world’s most valuable chip makers, joining an elite group of companies including Nvidia and TSMC.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on Wednesday that Taiwan is the "epicentre" of the AI revolution and the island will be the world's technology manufacturing hub for a long time to come. Huang was speaking at a launch celebration in Taipei for the chip company's planned Taiwan headquarters, which he said will break ground this year with plans to become operational in 2030.

Lam Research is focused on adding sensing and AI capabilities to its semiconductor manufacturing tools to make them more productive as it plans expanded operations in Arizona and California, its chief executive told Reuters on Thursday. Shares of Lam, which supplies chipmakers such as Micron Technology and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, have risen more than 75% this year as huge demand for AI chips has spurred customers to buy more tools. Lam CEO Tim Archer said in an interview that the company's strategic focus over the next two years would be to equip those tools with more sensors that generate data that can be analyzed by AI systems to spot problems and inefficiencies early.
Amkor Technology is working with Advanced Micro Devices on packaging AMD's chips, Amkor said on Thursday. Earlier this week, Amkor said it had secured 67 additional acres of land in Arizona next to a 104-acre parcel where it is developing a new campus where it plans to start production in 2028. Modern data center chips such as those from AMD and Nvidia consist of multiple chips packaged together, and those packaging steps have become a key bottleneck in chip production.
