In this segment of the AI Investor Podcast from 24/7 Wall St., co-hosts Eric Bleeker and Austin Smith turn to Bloom Energy, a stock Bleeker has described as one that got away from him, and which was also a top holding in Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund. Smith sets it up by pointing listeners to a prior episode discussion of natural gas and behind-the-meter power delivery to data centers. Bleeker then reports Bloom's results: EPS of 78 cents against 41 cents expected, plus one of the most optimistic conference calls he has heard, with behind-the-meter generation clearly having its moment. The stock rose 12% after hours, then gave up the entire gain at the open the next day. Bleeker's explanation is that the move had nothing to do with fundamentals. He argues that Situational Awareness, a fund that had swelled to roughly $45 billion, was known to be running up to four times leverage, and that large trading firms recognized they could push it into a forced unwind. On his telling, shorts were layered across the portfolio early in the week, margin calls followed, and Citadel then bought the whole book in a block trade, after which the shorts came off. He points to the fund's top ten positions all rallying between 19% and 29% that day as evidence, and questions whether Citadel's rate-hike narrative earlier in the week was self-serving. He presents this as his own reading, not established fact. Smith agrees the dynamic is plausible, comparing it to the Icahn and Ackman fight over Herbalife, and predicts Aschenbrenner will have no trouble raising another fund.
