Samsung Electronics gained 7.7% and memory chipmaker SK Hynix was up 7.1%. The price of a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, was up 0.9% at $89.67 early Wednesday.

U.S. futures edged higher. Brent crude oil was unchanged at $87.72 a barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude also was flat at $82.13 a barrel.
