Tempus AI could capture a lucrative slice of Moderna and Merck’s personalized cancer therapy business, with Personalis at the center of the bet.

August was good to U.S. stock investors. All three major U.S. indexes are on track to finish the month in the green—something that has happened since May. The tech-focused Nasdaq is leading the way, up about 4.

For drugmakers, a clock starts before a drug is even approved: Patents run out, lower-priced copycats flood in and sales collapse. The pharma industry is entering its biggest wave of patent expirations in decades. The world’s bestselling drug in 2025, Merck’s cancer immunotherapy Keytruda, loses U.S. patent protection in 2028, and nearly every pharma company has at least one blockbuster drug that will go off patent in the next five years.

Over the past 12 months, the State Street SPDR S&P Biotech ETF is up around 85% versus roughly 20% for the S&P 500. Last week added an exclamation point: Moderna more than doubled in a single session after its mRNA cancer vaccine, developed with Merck, cleared a late-stage melanoma trial. For decades, U.S. and other Western companies enjoyed something close to a monopoly on cutting-edge science.

Merck added billions in a single day after its Moderna-partnered cancer vaccine cleared a major hurdle.

Nvidia (NVDA) is just days away from releasing second quarter earnings results this Wednesday, August 26, as Wall Street expects quarterly revenue of $92 billion. The Morning Brief's Jake Conley sits down with Barron's senior markets analysis writer Paul La Monica and Infrastructure Capital Advisors CEO Jay Hatfield to discuss why excellent earnings may still not be enough to impress investors in this stage of the AI cycle.

Moderna has always been a stock driven by narrative extremes. During the pandemic, it traded as if mRNA would transform medicine overnight, with its market capitalization peaking near $200 billion. Shares exploded 177% in a single session on Wednesday—the largest one-day surge for an S&P 500 company in over two decades—after Moderna and partner Merck reported successful late-stage trial results for their personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine.

After years of layoffs, cash burn and political attacks on its core technology, Moderna’s melanoma vaccine data notched the biotech company a much-needed win.

Scientists are on the cusp of fulfilling a decades-long quest: to use vaccines to teach the immune system to spot and destroy cancer cells. News that an mRNA cancer vaccine developed by Merck & Co. and Moderna Inc. kept melanoma from returning in a large, late-stage trial marks a critical next chapter for a technology beleaguered by post-pandemic political backlash and years of false starts before then. Bloomberg Opinion Columnist Lisa Jarvis writes "Moderna and Merck's Cancer Vaccine Is a Marvel."

The stock market still looks basically healthy, but the bond market is starting to show signs of stress.
Investing.com -- A historic single-day move in biotech dominated the week, while a Treasury liquidity announcement impacted crypto and metals. Two well-known consumer names went in opposite directions on earnings.

After ripping through the first half of the year, memory stocks are struggling to regain momentum as growing concerns about the state of the artificial intelligence trade overshadow their strong fundamental backdrop.

The day after Moderna’s stock posted its biggest one-day gain on record, it is on track for its largest percent drop in more than two years as investors digested the news and adjusted their positions. Prior to Wednesday’s rally on positive mRNA cancer vaccine data, Moderna’s stock had substantial short interest at 13.7%. UBS said its clients sold a record $44 million in Moderna shares Wednesday, suggesting some investors were cashing out after the rally.

Moderna's stock just surged in a way that transforms the company from a cash-burning vaccine maker into a serious acquirer, and four biotech targets already sit within striking range of its newly loaded war chest.

Promising news from a major drug company, reports of some dovish Fed committee members, and a government bond buyback announcement combined forces to boost markets on Wednesday. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite also closed up 0.2%. The Treasury Department’s announcement this morning also helped calm the bond market—though for how long remains to be seen after the U.S. debt crossed a $40 trillion threshold on Wednesday.

Drug company stocks soared following news that Moderna and Merck’s experimental mRNA-based cancer vaccine succeeded in a late-stage trial at preventing melanoma from returning or spreading. The S&P health-care sector is on track for an all-time closing high, as is Merck, according to data that goes back to 1972. As of Wednesday afternoon, Moderna’s stock had more than doubled, something that a member of the S&P 500 hasn't done in a single day since 2008, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
