Silver Lake's potential Workday buyout could bolster battered software valuations by showing that private equity remains confident in the industry's prospects despite fears of AI disruption, analysts and investors said on Friday. Shares of the human-resources and financial management software company soared nearly 18% on Thursday after Reuters exclusively reported about its acquisition talks with Silver Lake, which pushed its market value to more than $51 billion. This would be a really significant deal because software deals have been largely on the sidelines this year.

"The reason why is because earlier this year, frontier labs had released some of the AI agents that created fear in the market that software companies may not be that valuable as they used to be in the past. So we saw this broader sell-off of software stocks and some companies with pretty strong fundamentals like Workday had been part of that mix. The company actually was down 15% since the beginning of the year before Reuters reported on the discussions. So it creates an opportunity for a sponsor like Silver Lake to come in and do a deal of that size. Silver Lake's also has done deals like this before."

"Earlier this month, Silver Lake had completed their $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts, which is a really significant deal as well. For that deal, they had partnered with their co-investors. So I assume, and we hear from sources that that's likely the case. They will partner with a co-investor for a take-private of Workday."

"It's really significant because it shows that there is confidence that the terminal value of software companies is still there. And AI is not as significant of a risk for some companies as we previously thought, the market previously thought."
