Amazon said on Monday it has signed a multi-billion-dollar deal with specialty glass maker Corning aimed at boosting U.S. production of optical fiber and connectivity products that are used in data centers. Amazon, however, did not disclose any further financial details on the partnership. Shares of Corning rose about 7% in early trading, as the partnership came as a fresh boost to the company's fast-growing fiber optics unit, at a time when weak consumer electronics demand has weighed on the segment that makes Gorilla glass.
The fear of higher rates slowing the debt-fueled AI buildout is battering shares in firms across the data-center supply chain. Companies ranging from construction firms to fiber-optic cable manufacturers to cooling specialists are down: Contractor Sterling Infrastructure and fiber provider Corning slid more than 10%.
Huang's remarks crystallized a hierarchy that Wall Street is now pricing in aggressively. "We should use copper as much as we can, for as long as we can, but copper has its limits," he said. "The right strategy is to scale up with copper as long as you can — after that you scale up further with optics, you scale out with optics and you scale across with optics. So you use optics wherever you must, you use copper wherever you can."
