Analysis-Oracle Corp goes for high-stakes ratings gamble in AI strategy

Cloud computing giant Oracle Corp is on the cusp of a junk-grade credit rating and its shares have tanked as the artificial intelligence hyperscaler becomes the fall guy of investors' concerns over the sector's debt-fuelled spending binge. The U.S. multinational is an outlier among top software firms racing to buy chips and build computing power to leapfrog the AI boom, forced by its limited cash reserves to borrow heavily and undertake massive long-term leases. The extent of the splurge came to light in June, ‌when Oracle's results for the fiscal year ending in May 2026 showed its free cash flows were negative, the bulk of its revenue was spent on capital expenditure and it had signed roughly $260 billion of data centre leases, some starting next year.

Hyperscaler debt binge pushes yields up as investor demand cools

Major U.S. technology companies are borrowing heavily as they ramp up spending on their artificial intelligence buildout, and at steadily higher yields as investors become more selective about absorbing the growing supply. Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Oracle issued about $194 ‌billion of bonds in 2026 through July 7, up 79% from roughly $108 billion in all of 2025, according to a Reuters analysis ‌of LSEG data. Goldman Sachs expects bond issuance by the five hyperscalers, including Microsoft Corp, to reach roughly $250 billion this year and $400 billion in 2027.

AI Bond Binge Enters New Era of Weak Demand and Sky-High Prices

Big Tech Stocks Are Pricing In a Miracle on Costs

Wall Street’s forecasts for Big Tech require a major leap of faith: that the biggest AI hyperscalers can boost revenue much faster than the costs of running their businesses. Investors are already on edge about these companies’ soaring capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence. The bullish earnings narrative requires these companies to achieve newfound operating efficiency even as they spend trillions of dollars in capex over the next few years.
