<body><p>STORY: From Apple losing out against landmark EU rules to solar-powered EVs...</p><p>This is Tech Weekly.</p><p>:: Tech Weekly</p><p>Apple lost its challenge against landmark EU rules.</p><p>The tech giant tried to refute the designation of its app stores and operating system as gatekeepers.&nbsp;</p><p>It means Apple is subject to obligations aimed at giving rivals more room to compete.</p><p>The EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) sets out a list of rules for Big Tech with the threat of big fines if they don't follow along.</p><p>It has triggered legal challenges by Apple, Meta and ByteDance since it took effect over three years ago.</p><p>Global smartphone shipments fell 11% in the second quarter to their lowest level for the period since 2013.</p><p>That's according to early estimates from Counterpoint Research, which said a memory chip shortage has driven up smartphone prices and hurt demand.</p><p>Memory chip prices have soared as suppliers focus on AI data center customers over consumer electronics.</p><p>It’s forced smartphone makers to pass along higher costs through price hikes, particularly for entry- and mid-range devices.</p><p>SK Hynix shares fell more than 15% in trading on Monday - just days after its U.S. listing.</p><p>It was the South Korean chip giant's biggest one-day decline on record.</p><p>Investors in Seoul cashed out of a massive share price rally following its Nasdaq debut last week.</p><p>The fall in SK Hynix and rival Samsung Electronics stock led to a 9% plunge in South Korea's Kospi and triggered a 20-minute trading halt.</p><p>And an electric vehicle made by Renault completed a 1,000-mile journey using only solar power.&nbsp;</p><p>Easee CEO, Anthony Fernandez, said the vehicle was charged at solar installations along the route from the UK’s Land's End to John o' Groats…</p><p>As well as portable lithium-ion battery units that had been charged using only solar power.</p><p>"I think what's going on in the world at the moment is really forcing people to rethink where their energy comes from, and I think people are gravitating more and more towards renewable technology. And also to reduce the dependency that we have on the grid, which in many parts of the world is aging quite rapidly."</p><p>The car's five-day trip was backed by Easee and Renault.</p></body>

China's smartphone shipments fell 4.3% to 66 million ‌units in the second quarter from a year ‌earlier, as many manufacturers hiked prices to reflect rising memory and ​component costs, research firm IDC said on Tuesday. It was the fifth straight quarterly decline, and first-half shipments were down 4.2% from a year earlier. Huawei Technologies and Apple were ‌the only vendors ⁠to post growth in the quarter, with shipments up 19.4% and 24.4%, respectively.

<body><p>STORY: Global smartphone shipments fell 11% in the second quarter to their lowest level for the period since 2013.</p><p>That's according to early estimates from Counterpoint Research, which said a memory chip shortage has driven up smartphone prices and dampened demand.</p><p>Memory chip prices have soared as suppliers prioritize AI data center customers over consumer electronics, forcing smartphone makers to pass along higher costs through price hikes, particularly for entry- and mid-range devices.</p><p>Among the world's top five smartphone companies, mid-tier firms Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo posted the steepest declines.</p><p>Apple and Samsung, however, bucked the downward trend.</p><p>:: Samsung</p><p>Samsung reclaimed the top spot with a 24% share of the smartphone market, while Apple took its global market share to a record 20% in the quarter.</p><p>And while the memory chip shortage has hurt many smartphone makers, it has helped the chip's suppliers.</p><p>South Korea's SK Hynix, one of the largest memory chip makers, debuted on the Nasdaq last Friday after its shares in South Korea rose more than sevenfold over the past 12 months.</p><p>:: Micron</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of its American rival Micron Technology soared nearly 650% over the past year.</p><p>That's made many investors bullish on both stocks, says Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird Private Wealth Management.</p><p>"The reality is the demand for memory is so large and so bottlenecked that both companies are in tremendous positions, have tremendous margins, tremendous pricing power.&nbsp;And while there are slight differences, you could really take or pick either and probably be very satisfied over the coming year or two as an investor."</p><p>But the investor euphoria cooled on Monday as shares of Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron all tumbled amid a broader market selloff.</p></body>
