Intel turns to next-generation ASML tool to help make its laptop chips

Intel has decided to use a high-end machine from ASML to ‌manufacture some of its flagship Panther Lake laptop chips, ASML ‌said on Tuesday, a move that will help the chipmaker learn to use the tool more effectively. Following experiments that began in 2024, Intel has begun to use ASML's next-generation high numerical aperture (High NA) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines, which print circuit patterns on to microchips, to help produce a ‌portion of its Panther Lake processors, ASML said. The industry has debated at what point it makes economic sense to begin deploying the High NA tools, which likely will be needed by chipmakers in the future as they continue to shrink the atomic-sized features that make up chips.

Chip toolmaker ASML expected to shine light on capacity and China challenges

ASML, the biggest supplier of equipment used to manufacture AI chips, reports quarterly earnings on Wednesday looking to justify its chunky valuation and demonstrate how it will contend with U.S. moves to block ‌exports to China. Clouding the outlook, however, is a proposed U.S. law requiring U.S. allies to align with export controls to curb China's ability to make advanced chips, with ASML named in the legislation. The company has denied selling its most advanced EUV tools to China, which is forecast to account for up to 20% of ASML's sales this year through legal purchases of ‌less-advanced DUV tools to make chips for automotive, industrial and electronic products.

Intel announces $5.7 billion capital investment at Irish manufacturing hub

Intel has begun a €5 billion ($5.7 billion) capital investment at its Irish campus ‌to expand its manufacturing output in Europe and ‌meet growing global demand for AI and high-performance computing, the U.S. chipmaker said on Monday. Intel said the move would maximize capacity at its European manufacturing base in Leixlip outside Dublin, expanding current production output, advancing research and development activities and utilising ‌capacity across existing cleanroom space. Intel is one of the key multinationals in Ireland's foreign investment-focused economy, having already invested €30 billion in the country since 1989, more than half of which was spent between 2019 and 2023 to double capacity at the plant in order to produce the company's most ‌advanced process technologies.
