It’s been easy to call a bottom in Lululemon Athletica in recent years–just keep waiting another day. The specialty athleticwear company, which had already dropped nearly 40% year to date alone before it reported fiscal first-quarter earnings after the bell Thursday, didn’t reward bargain hunters. The quarter itself was better than expected, but the full-year outlook was the culprit: Lululemon said it will earn between $10.95 and $11.15 a share on revenue that will be flat or down 1%, translating into $11 billion to $11.15 billion.
Lululemon Athletica shares fell 8% Friday morning to their lowest level since 2018 after the company reported another quarterly decline in U.S. sales and cut its outlook for the year. Executives said some product launches, including a new line of yoga apparel, have fallen short of the company’s expectations. "The edge that Lululemon once had in releasing collections that were interesting, innovative, and on trend has disappeared," wrote Neil Saunders, managing director of research firm GlobalData.
The athletic retailer’s performance business needs to grow up to 25% to hit guidance, according to analysts, while the game company reported the highest quarterly net income in its history.
