<body><p>STORY: Comcast said it will split into two publicly traded companies, separating its media and entertainment brands from its broadband cable and wireless businesses.</p><p>:: Comcast</p><p>The announcement sent its shares up as much as 17% in Monday trading.</p><p>:: Universal Orlando Resort</p><p>Comcast would spin off NBCUniversal and Sky to create a company that includes NBC, Peacock, Universal theme parks, and film and TV studios.</p><p>The other company would be comprised of Comcast's cable, wireless and business services divisions.</p><p>The move would unwind 15 years of consolidation at Comcast, dating back to 2011 when CEO Brian Roberts stormed the media world by buying NBCUniversal in a deal that valued the entertainment giant at nearly $40 billion. </p><p>But since then, both divisions have felt the strain of the rapid rise of streaming and industry consolidation. </p><p>Comcast's stock has suffered as a result, with shares falling more than 17% this year through Friday's close after two straight years of declines.</p><p>Roberts said the planned split should quote, "unlock a more entrepreneurial management approach and open up a multitude of new opportunities for each business."</p><p>While he plans to remain "actively involved" in leading both companies, Roberts' Co-CEO at Comcast, Mike Cavanagh, will run the new NBCUniversal, while Michael Angelakis, a former chief financial officer, will return to lead Comcast as CEO.</p></body>
