Stocks rose and gasoline prices continued to fall after the U.S. and Iran signed an interim peace agreement to wind down the war, capping a holiday-shortened week on a high note. Brent crude futures, the international oil benchmark, finished the day near flat at $79.85 a barrel, about $7.50 closer than they started the week to the prewar level of about $72.50. The recent drop in oil prices has already translated into relief at the pump for Americans: The average cost of a gallon of gasoline slipped below $4 for the first time in more than two months, according to AAA.

From the stock market to government debt and the greenback, investors enjoyed gains most of where they looked on Thursday, closing up their holiday-shortened week. Information Technology was the best performing sector for the day in the moments before the close up nearly 3%, a gain captured by the popular iShares U.S. Technology ETF. Wall Street analysts expect tech companies to grow earnings by 39% this year, which accounts for over half of the S&P 500 earnings growth for the year, data from Ned David Research show.

The S&P 500 energy sector is on track to be the worst performing sector of the index for the day and week. Popular energy ETF State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR is down 2.1% for the day and over 7% for the week. "Full reopening of Hormuz may bring Brent prices to $82/bbl this year, from $93 prior, setting a $70-80 range for most of" the second half of 2026, wrote BofA Global Research.
