Sony Group and Taiwan's TSMC plan to spend around 1 trillion yen ($6.32 billion) to jointly make next-generation microchips used in image sensors, the Nikkei business daily said on Monday. A joint venture owned about 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC will start commercial production as early as 2029 in southern Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, the paper said. The two tech giants said in May they planned to form a joint venture in Japan to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors, combining Sony's sensor design expertise with TSMC's manufacturing and process technology strengths.

Taiwanese chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) said on Wednesday that its board approved an expansion plan, including additional cleanroom capacity at its Singapore facility and a new fab building at its flagship Tainan campus in Taiwan, to meet growing AI-driven demand. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's largest contract chipmaker, said late on Tuesday it had begun gradually resuming operations at its Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) plant in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture after a strong earthquake prompted the precautionary evacuation of workers. The company said all personnel at the Japan site were confirmed safe after being evacuated in accordance with internal safety procedures. JASM's construction site was unaffected, TSMC said, adding that parts of the construction work had been suspended as a safety precaution because there could still be occasional aftershocks.
Cadence Design Systems stock jumped Tuesday after the chip-design company reported better-than-expected earnings and reaffirmed its positioning as an artificial-intelligence beneficiary. Cadence reported adjusted earnings of $2.11 a share in the second quarter, up from $1.65 a year ago and above analysts’ consensus estimate of $2.05, according to FactSet. Cadence lifted its full-year guidance for adjusted earnings per share to between $8.05 and $8.15, up from a previous range of $7.85 to $7.95.
