Samsung hikes chipmaking prices by up to 15% on demand spike, sources say

Samsung Electronics has raised prices for some advanced contract chipmaking services by up to 15% for new orders, two people familiar with the matter said, as demand for AI chips tightens capacity in a business long dominated by TSMC. Demand from Chinese ‌customers has been particularly strong, but Samsung has been unable to meet all orders because it must serve U.S. customers and reserve part ‌of its capacity to support its own chip production, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are discussing sensitive commercial matters. Chinese customers are among those accepting the steepest price increase, one of the sources said, underscoring how U.S. curbs on exports of advanced chipmaking equipment to China have increased local firms' reliance on overseas foundries.

How a Sony Veteran Is Overhauling the Company He Grew Up In

TOKYO—When Sony said in March that it was offloading its television business to a new joint venture with a Chinese rival, many in Japan felt a pang of nostalgia for the heyday of the country’s consumer-electronics industry. This is true even though he has worked for the company since 1987, and is fluent in corporate lore about when color TV—and later, the Walkman and PlayStation—made Sony a household name. Since taking the top job last year, Totoki has made the TV deal, brought in chip giant TSMC to collaborate on Sony’s valuable image sensor and spun off Sony’s financial arm—a unit he once ran.

Intel launches $15 billion share sale as turnaround rally lifts stock

Intel is planning to raise $15 billion through a share ‌sale, the U.S. chipmaker said ‌on Monday as it looks to fund the costly build-out of its chip contract manufacturing business by cashing in on a stock surge fueled by its turnaround efforts. Once ‌the dominant force in the global chip industry, Intel is investing heavily in new facilities and advanced packaging capabilities as it seeks to challenge industry leader such as TSMC in contract chip manufacturing. Its ‌shares fell more than 3% in premarket trading, likely on concerns about shareholder dilution from the stock sale.
