<body><p>STORY: :: Kroger</p><p>Shares of U.S. grocer Kroger fell about 2% Wednesday morning after the company said it would buy regional supermarket chain Giant Eagle in a nearly $1.7 billion deal.</p><p>:: Archive</p><p>The move strengthens Kroger's presence in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic region amid intensifying competition.</p><p>The transaction is the first under CEO Greg Foran, and is also Kroger's first major acquisition since its $25 billion merger with Albertsons fell apart in 2024.</p><p>:: Archive</p><p>Family-owned Giant Eagle generates about $9 billion in annual sales. It operates nearly 200 supermarkets and about a dozen standalone pharmacies across parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.</p><p>:: Kroger</p><p>Foran said the chain was a good strategic fit for Kroger, which has been battling intense competition from Walmart, Amazon and other grocers as still-elevated inflation has many consumers seeking cheaper essentials.</p><p>Kroger has previously said it plans to cut prices on thousands of items, funded partly by direct imports and better use of technology.</p><p>The Giant Eagle acquisition is expected to close in 2027.</p></body>
