The tech selloff has spread beyond semiconductor stocks to many of this year’s biggest listings, even as some Wall Street analysts argue the pullback is a healthy reset rather than the end of the AI boom.

<body><p>STORY: Wall Street's main indexes ended lower on Thursday, with the Dow dropping two-tenths of a percent, the S&P 500 shedding about half a percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq losing almost one-and-a-half percent.</p><p>Chip stocks tumbled despite bellwether TSMC posting a 77% jump in quarterly profit, it's shares falling more than 2%.</p><p>Mel Casey, senior portfolio manager at FBB Capital Partners, said the pullback demonstrated the lofty expectations for a sector that has soared by nearly 70% so far this year. </p><p>"You just have so many investors in the same trade here and really banking on every little component of the value chain, like, humming along at maximum pace. And so anything that's a little bit shy of, say, the whisper, or anything that's as good as expected but not better than expected is seen almost as a disappointment. And so that's what you're seeing today. But there's nothing you could really point to in the Taiwan Semi report to feel bearish about."</p><p>Memory-chip makers were among the biggest laggards, with SanDisk, Western Digital, Seagate Technology and Intel down between about five-and-a-half and twelve-and-a-half percent.</p><p>:: Netflix</p><p>Elsewhere in the market, shares of Netflix tumbled more than 7% in extended trading after the streaming giant's third-quarter revenue and earnings projections hovered below Wall Street targets. The company also said it would reduce the amount of information it discloses about consumers' viewing hours as it seeks new avenues of growth.</p><p>Shares of UnitedHealth Group closed higher after the company beat Wall Street earnings estimates and hiked its 2026 forecast.</p><p>But shares of United Airlines fell as surging oil prices weighed on its forward guidance.</p><p>Meanwhile, generally upbeat economic data on Thursday showed solid core retail sales, a drop in jobless claims and surging manufacturing activity in the Northeast.</p></body>
The Nasdaq composite fell 1.5%, leading the session’s losses. Another quarter of solid earnings from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing did little to mitigate a rough patch for chip stocks, with investors worried more about its spending plans than its bright outlook. By Stella Qiu SYDNEY, July 16 (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Thursday as chipmakers stumbled ahead of results from bellwether TSMC, while bonds benefited from another benign reading on U.S.

<body><p>STORY: U.S. stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the Dow gaining more than a quarter of a percent, the S&P 500 adding over a third of a percent and the Nasdaq climbing more than six-tenths of a percent.</p><p>A second day of solid bank earnings added momentum to an auspicious beginning to second-quarter reporting season.</p><p>BlackRock and Morgan Stanley both beat quarterly profit expectations, with shares of BlackRock advancing over 6.5% and Morgan Stanley also ending higher.</p><p>Strong earnings combined with more cooler-than-expected inflation data, in the form of June wholesale prices, helped lift stocks, says Melissa Brown, managing director of investment decision research at SimCorp.</p><p>"We saw some good earnings from the financial companies. And, you know, on top of that, there's just still the same buzz around the AI trade, around what's happening with semiconductors. And there's, we haven't really seen a lot of bad news. The inflation news has been better than expected, although I would argue still not good. So inflation is still higher than the Fed's target, even though it has come in a little bit lower than expected. But I think, you know, kind of all those things are conspiring to make it a good but not blowout day today."</p><p>Among the session's other stock moves, PayPal surged more than 17% after sources told Reuters that Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have jointly offered to acquire it.</p><p>And shares of United Airlines dipped in extended trading despite the carrier saying it expected full-year profit at the high end of its prior forecast, as the company's third-quarter outlook was short of Wall Street expectations.</p></body>
