A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators on Monday urged President Donald Trump's administration to tighten rules on chip contract manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to prevent them from making advanced AI chips for overseas subsidiaries of Chinese companies. This comes after the Trump administration last week moved to halt a potential loophole that may have led companies to export advanced chips such as those made by Nvidia to subsidiaries of Chinese companies located outside China. The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), the arm of the U.S. Commerce Department that oversees export control laws, has clarified that sales to Chinese company subsidiaries in third countries such as Malaysia require a license.

In 2019, while researching a book on the U.S.-China competition, I visited Huawei’s sprawling new R&D campus in Dongguan, a city about an hour’s drive from the company’s Shenzhen headquarters. A Huawei executive explained the design to me with a straight face: “We’re doing well in Europe.” In a Wall Street Journal interview that November, founder Ren Zhengfei invited President Trump to come visit and brushed off U.S. sanctions with characteristic bravado.
The chairman of South Korea's SK Group said on Tuesday its memory chip unit SK Hynix aims to double wafer capacity over the next five years. Chey Tae-won was speaking at the Computex conference in Taipei, where executives from some of the world's top technology companies, including Nvidia, are gathering. He added that he hopes his company can be a major high-bandwidth memory (HBM) supplier for Nvidia's Vera Rubin system.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Tuesday that maintaining the political status quo is the most responsible thing the island can do to secure global supply chains as it hosts some of the world's leading technology leaders at an annual conference. Taiwan plays a pivotal role in the global artificial intelligence supply chain for companies including Nvidia and Apple, and its position is anchored by the world's largest contract chipmaker, TSMC. "As the world's need for AI grows, so too does its need for a Taiwan that is stable, trustworthy, and capable of shouldering responsibility," Lai said at the opening ceremony of Computex in Taipei, where leaders of some of the largest global technology companies are gathering.
