Nvidia has paid several billion dollars to help ‌fund new factories for glassmaker Corning in addition ‌to taking an equity stake of up to $3.2 billion disclosed ​earlier this week, the CEOs of the two companies confirmed on Thursday. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the AI chip supplier has made "a multi-billion-dollar prepayment" ‌that was not ⁠disclosed when it announced an equity investment earlier this week in Corning, whose ⁠glass is used in the fiber-optic cables that connect computers in massive data centers. "It's going to create thousands of jobs," Huang said.

Coherent reported quarterly earnings that were in-line with Wall Street’s expectations, with gross margins increasing slightly. The optical networking company is benefiting from the artificial intelligence data center boom—but shares fell anyway. Coherent posted adjusted earnings of $1.41 a share for the fiscal third-quarter, compared to 91 cents a year ago and Wall Street’s $1.40 a share prediction.

Corning and Nvidia said on Wednesday they would partner to expand U.S. production ‌of optical connectivity products used in artificial intelligence ‌data centers. The specialty glass maker also raised its long-term sales targets ​on surging demand for AI infrastructure. The deal shows how the AI boom is lifting demand beyond chips, benefiting suppliers ‌such as Corning ⁠that make the fiber-optic equipment needed to move data between thousands of processors in ⁠large data centers.

Shares in Corning are trading nearly 20% higher premarket after Nvidia said it would invest $500 million in the glassmaker. The injection is part of a partnership to expand manufacturing of fiber optics, which are used in AI data centers to transfer data quickly and at scale. Demand for fiber optics has supercharged Corning stock in recent months.
